The PVC Transparent Sheet Extruder Machine is the central piece of equipment in any transparent sheet production line, and its design determines whether the final product meets the 85 percent transparency target. Transparency in a PVC sheet is not a single property. It is the result of every process decision made from the hopper to the cooling rolls. A sheet that looks clear but has internal haze will fail in packaging applications. A sheet that has good surface gloss but yellowing will not meet food contact standards. Achieving 85 percent transparency requires precise control of the raw material formulation, the screw design, the die head, the roller temperature, and the cooling rate. This guide explains the critical control points and how our factory designs equipment to achieve consistent optical clarity.
The transparency of a PVC sheet begins with the formulation. PVC resin alone is not transparent because of its amorphous structure and the presence of additives. To achieve optical clarity, the formulation must include three key components. The first is the PVC resin grade. Suspension PVC with a K-value of 57 to 60 is preferred for transparent sheet because it has a narrow particle size distribution and low fish-eye content. The second is the thermal stabilizer. Organotin stabilizers are the standard for transparent PVC because they do not impart color and have excellent thermal stability. Calcium-zinc stabilizers are used for food contact applications but may have slightly lower transparency. The third is the impact modifier. Acrylic impact modifiers are preferred over chlorinated polyethylene because they have a refractive index that is closer to that of PVC, which reduces light scattering. The table below shows the effect of different formulation components on transparency.
| Formulation component | Typical loading (phr) | Effect on transparency |
| PVC resin (K-value 57) | 100 | Base polymer |
| Organotin stabilizer | 1.5 – 2.5 | High clarity, no color |
| Acrylic impact modifier | 5 – 8 | Minimal haze increase |
| Processing aid (acrylic) | 0.5 – 1.5 | Improves surface finish |
| Lubricant (internal) | 0.3 – 0.8 | Reduces friction, prevents burning |
| Lubricant (external) | 0.2 – 0.5 | Prevents sticking to rolls |
In our factory, we work with customers to optimize the formulation for their specific transparency target. The loading of the impact modifier is particularly critical. If the loading is too low, the sheet will be brittle. If it is too high, the transparency will drop below 85 percent because the acrylic particles scatter light.
The screw is the heart of the PVC Transparent Sheet Extruder Machine. Its job is to melt the PVC compound uniformly without causing thermal degradation. Poor screw design leads to unmelted particles, which appear as white specks in the sheet. It also leads to localized overheating, which causes yellowing. For transparent sheet, a barrier screw with a mixing section is recommended. The barrier section separates the solid bed from the melt, which ensures that unmelted particles do not reach the die. The mixing section homogenizes the melt temperature and disperses the additives. The table below shows the key screw design parameters for transparent sheet extrusion.
| Screw parameter | Typical range for transparent sheet | Effect on transparency |
| L/D ratio | 24:1 – 30:1 | Higher L/D improves melting uniformity |
| Compression ratio | 2.5:1 – 3.0:1 | Balanced compression prevents overheating |
| Barrier section length | 4 – 6 turns | Separates solid from melt |
| Mixing section type | Maddock or pineapple | Homogenizes melt temperature |
| Screw material | Bimetallic, chrome plated | Corrosion resistance, long life |
| Screw speed | 30 – 60 RPM | Lower speed reduces shear heating |
Qingdao Eaststar Plastic Machinery Co., Ltd. designs and manufactures barrier screws specifically for transparent PVC sheet. Our factory uses a bimetallic screw with a chrome-plated surface to resist corrosion from the HCl released during PVC processing. The screw geometry is optimized for each customer's formulation and output rate.
After the melt leaves the screw, it passes through the die head and then through a three-roll stack. The die head must distribute the melt evenly across the width of the sheet. Any dead spots or flow lines in the die will appear as streaks in the sheet. The die lips must be polished to a mirror finish to prevent surface defects. The roller stack determines the surface finish and the cooling rate. The first roll, called the nip roll, determines the surface gloss. It must be polished to a high finish and maintained at a precise temperature. The second and third rolls control the cooling rate. If the cooling rate is too slow, the PVC will crystallize, which reduces transparency. If it is too fast, the sheet will have internal stresses that cause warping. The table below shows the recommended roller temperatures for transparent PVC sheet.
| Roller position | Typical temperature | Function |
| Roll 1 (nip) | 60 – 75°C | Surface finish, gloss |
| Roll 2 (middle) | 70 – 85°C | Cooling, thickness control |
| Roll 3 (bottom) | 40 – 55°C | Final cooling, stress relief |
Our factory equips the PVC Transparent Sheet Extruder Machine with a three-roll stack that has individual temperature control for each roll. The rolls are internally chrome-plated and ground to a surface finish of Ra 0.05 microns. This ensures that the sheet has a smooth, high-gloss surface that maximizes light transmission.
Transparency is measured using a hazemeter according to ASTM D1003. The hazemeter measures the percentage of light that is transmitted through the sheet and the percentage that is scattered. Total transmittance is the sum of both. A sheet with 85 percent transparency has a total transmittance of 85 percent and a haze value of less than 5 percent. In our factory, we test every production batch using a hazemeter. The test is performed on samples taken from the beginning, middle, and end of each roll. If any sample falls below the specification, the production parameters are adjusted. The table below shows the typical optical properties of our transparent PVC sheet.
| Property | Typical value | Test method |
| Total transmittance | 85 – 90% | ASTM D1003 |
| Haze | 2 – 5% | ASTM D1003 |
| Yellow index | < 2 | ASTM E313 |
| Surface gloss (60°) | 85 – 95 GU | ASTM D523 |
| Thickness tolerance | ± 0.02 mm | Micrometer |
Production verification tip: The yellow index is the most sensitive indicator of thermal degradation. If the yellow index rises above 2, the melt temperature is too high or the residence time is too long. Check the screw speed and the barrel temperature profile.
Achieving 85 percent transparency in PVC sheet extrusion requires careful control of the formulation, the screw design, the die head, and the roller stack. The most critical factors are the use of a barrier screw with a mixing section, a three-roll stack with individual temperature control, and a formulation that uses organotin stabilizers and acrylic impact modifiers. Regular testing with a hazemeter ensures that the sheet meets the specification.
